IBPS PO vs SBI PO: Which Bank Exam Should You Target?

If you dream of a banking officer job, two exams dominate the field: IBPS PO and SBI PO. They test almost the same syllabus, so the real question is not “which do I prepare for?” — it is “which do I target first, and how do I plan for both?” This guide breaks down the key differences and helps you decide.

Who conducts them

IBPS PO is conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection to recruit Probationary Officers for a group of public-sector banks. SBI PO is conducted by the State Bank of India to recruit POs for SBI alone. So IBPS PO can place you in one of several banks, while SBI PO is specifically for the country’s largest bank.

Selection process

Both follow a similar three-stage structure: a Preliminary exam, a Main exam and an interview. SBI PO typically adds a group exercise and psychometric element around the interview stage, and both Mains include a descriptive (writing) test of letter and essay. Always check the latest official notification for the exact pattern and marks in a given year, as these are revised from time to time.

Syllabus — nearly identical

The good news: preparation overlaps almost completely. Both exams test Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning Ability, English Language, and — in Mains — Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Banking/Economy Awareness and Computer Awareness. A strong, unified preparation plan prepares you for both exams at once.

Vacancies and difficulty

IBPS PO generally has more total vacancies because it recruits across several banks, which can mean comparatively more opportunities. SBI PO usually has fewer seats and attracts a very large number of applicants, so cutoffs tend to be highly competitive and the questions are often considered a notch trickier. In short: SBI PO is prestigious and tough; IBPS PO offers broader chances.

Posting and profile

An SBI PO can be posted anywhere in India and works in the country’s largest banking network, with wide exposure and strong growth. An IBPS PO is allotted to one of the participating banks and posted as per that bank’s needs. Both are respected officer-level roles with similar starting pay and strong career progression.

So which should you target?

For most aspirants, the answer is both. Because the syllabus is shared and the exams fall at different times in the calendar, preparing once lets you attempt both and maximise your chances of selection. If you must prioritise, choose based on your goal: aim for SBI PO if you specifically want SBI and are ready for stiff competition; lean on IBPS PO for wider opportunities across banks. Either way, do not put all your hopes on a single attempt.
