Common Admission Test (CAT)

What is CAT Exam?

  • CAT or the Common Admission Test is the most competitive MBA entrance exam of India taken by around 2 lakh candidates each year.
  • CAT is the most popular entrance exam for the admission to 19 IIMs and around 100 B-schools across India. 
  • The CAT exam will be conducted by IIM for admissions in the management programmes of IIMs.
  • The total number of seats for the 13 IIMs was 3335.
  • With the commencement of 6 new IIMs in Nagpur, Visakhapatnam, Sirmaur, Amritsar, Sambalpur and Bodh Gaya, the total number of seats have further increased. With the average intake being 60, the approximate seat is 3695.

Commencement of the Exam :

This exam is conducted every year by one of the IIM’s based on the policy of rotation and the CAT Exam Dates are generally declared in the  month of August every year and the CAT exam is held in the month of November and results get released by Second or Third Week of January.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Requires minimum 50% aggregate mark in graduation in any discipline from a recognized institute.
  • The candidates from SC, ST, OBC and DA category need an aggregate of 45% marks.
  • Final year graduation students can also apply provided they can submit the graduation final marks to the institutes within the requisite schedule.

Selection process:

The candidates are first shortlisted by IIMs and other participating B-schools on the basis of CAT cut off scores, followed by

1. Personal Interview (PI) and

2. Written Ability Test (WAT)/GD.

Application Fee:

  • The application cum registration window has started from August and will continue till September of the year.
  • The CAT application fee for General and NC-OBC candidates is Rs.1600 and SC/ST/PWD/ DA candidates is Rs. 800.

Score Validity:

  • The validity for the CAT score was just for 1 year but in the year of 2015 the IIM-Ahmedabad is considering to increase the validity of the CAT score from 1 year to 5 years.

Scoring Process

  • Each question will carry 3 marks. For the multiple choices objective type questions there will be negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer.
  • There will not be any negative marking for the non-MCQs.
  • No marks will be allotted or deducted for the un-attempted questions
